CORNEAL DISEASES

The most common Corneal Diseases are:

  • Corneal Ulcer

    • for e.g, contact lens-induced

  • Herpes Simplex/Herpes Zoster Keratitis

  • Keratoconus

    • a progressive eye disease in which the normally clear and round cornea thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape

  • Ocular Surface Disease

Symptoms

Symptoms can differ in each corneal disorder and can change over time. Generally, symptoms of corneal diseases include:

​

  • Blurring of vision

  • Pain

  • Discharge

  • Distorted vision, straight look bent or wavy

  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare

  • Eye redness or swelling

  • Increased astigmatism, need new eye prescription often

Causes

Some of the causes for the following corneal disorders are:

​

  • Corneal Ulcer :

    • infections with bacteria, fungi, viruses, or parasites

    • contact lens induced

 

  • Herpes Simplex/Herpes Zoster Keratitis:

    • herpes simplex/zoster virus

 

  • Keratoconus:

    • unknown cause but appears to be hereditary

Corneal Diseases Treatments

Each corneal disorder is treated differently. Among the treatements are:

  • eye drops

  • removal of infected and damaged eye cells

  • for keratoconus, spectacles or rigid contact lenses, and corneal transplant depending on severity of the condition
